Another month, another rendition of the Locals’ Edit where we pass the itinerary to a San Diego creative who helps shape how this city feels. This month, we’re handing it over to Paola Capó García, San Diego Poet Laureate, published author, and educator.
Paola, we first met at one of your Soft Focus readings last summer. That series became a quiet gateway into poetry and literary spaces that feel alive with community, and it’s since shaped how Funktion seeks out and shares those moments across the city.
Paola Capó García makes poetry feel human again - unintimidating, unpretentious, and deeply rooted in place. As San Diego’s current Poet Laureate, she doesn’t just represent the city’s literary arts; she acts on it, building programs where people can gather, listen, and walk away feeling empowered. This Local Edit is an invitation into her San Diego: the neighborhoods she calls home, the places she returns to, the rituals she keeps, and the ways poetry quietly weaves through everyday life here.
